My wonderful new dorothy-esque slippers, - A happy christmas-time trade with Erandi Gutierrez of Goldenponies.
I instantly fell in love with these because i am completely enthralled by anything glittery. (like most girls, right!) What's even better is that Goldenponies shoes are handcrafted by Erandi in Mexico.

I think this obsession all started in kindergarten when my mum covered her childhood tap shoes in silver glitter and surprised me with them, so i could go to school dressed as a tightrope walker on a circus themed day. I even had a little tulle skirt and a purple leotard adorned with jewels. My most remembered childhood outfit! I also used to wear it when running around in the backyard playing real life mortal kombat with the neighbouring kids.

Hello new year.
I think the biggest project i worked on in 2011 was a lookbook i designed for pop-up fashion boutique, Audrey Grace. Spanning about 80 pages, the illustrated book details the custom dresses created for the boutique by young designers around the globe. I feel quite lucky to bring other people's creations into my own paperdoll world, especially when they are as beautiful as these.
Here are some snapshots of the book below, and i'll be revealing the drawings themselves as the weeks go by, as there quite a few to get through.

My favourite dresses are the kind reminiscent of something a pin-up girl or hollywood starlet would have worn in the 1950's. You know the type - Cinched waists, fitted skirts, divine fabrics and saucy necklines. The dress above is an illustration of a great dress by American vintage inspired label Shabby Apple, - which was so graciously gifted to me just in time for the christmas holidays. The Ski Bop dress is a most becoming red wine hue, (which matches my favourite lipstick), it hugs curves like an overzealous boyfriend and has a silky satiny lining which feels lovely on. Dita Von Teese, eat your heart out!

The Version Suicides - The Grates + Whyte Fang

An EP cover for my gorgeous Brisbane buddies, the Grates!
Sydney producer Whyte Fang has put her own spin on the these tunes, and I in turn was asked to re-interpret the current album cover. I'm a bit obsessed with the moon, so ended up drawing a girl being worshipped by the moon cycle. Sparkly and Mysterious, she sits alone, casting spells.

(If my seventeen year old self would have known that one day i'd be doing cover art for these guys, i probably would've died.) They've been so supportive of my work and i thank them very much for such an awesome opportunity. love love love.

Rainbow Chan / Sweet Tooth

An EP cover i designed for one of my gorgeous buddies, Rainbow Chan.
I think this girl is immensely talented and i love her to bits. Rainbow just travelled over to Iceland as the winner of the FBI Northern Lights competition, and had the amazing opportunity to play her glitchy sweethearted tunes over there. She also does an awesome cover of 'Lovefool' by the cardigans and is classically trained in choral singing, saxophone and piano!
(I also made a gig poster for Rainbow earlier in the year and hope to do some more exciting collaborations with her in 2012.)

Two months ago i was asked to create some illustrations for the latest issue of Worn - an independent Canadian fashion Journal - for an article about window dressing through the decades. I got to work with some very lovely ladies (oh, what a sweet and stylish team!) and depicted the wacky decorating schemes dreamed up by Salvador Dali, Frank L. Baum and Simon Doonan.

Meet my new friend! It's a pocket mirror which is some kind of creepy animal (we cannot tell if it wants to be a rabbit or a dog or an amalgamation of the two). It also resembles a soft bun cake drizzled with chocolate. so squishy. Cutest thing in the world. Hope i don't eat it.

Here is a record cover i designed (maybe over a year ago!) for Australian label Zerohour Doom & Glamour. It's for a 7" called Secrets of the World, which is pressed on nice white vinyl. The sleeve is adorned with spidery fonts and nymph-ish ladies with an abundance of tangly black locks.
Tunes by Jackie Ransom, Luster and Beta Evers are what you'll hear if you give this baby a spin.

I've been doing alot of work for Jaclyn Bethany, the creator of Audrey Grace, and seeing as the shop opens in late december, i can finally begin to reveal some of it. (I've literally spent weeks drawing girls in gorgeous dresses for a very special project which i'm very, very excited to reveal soon.)
Being able to create work around one of my obsessions (The Golden age of Hollywood) has been the biggest treat this year. I've also tried something new - adding white highlights with a gel pen.

Lately i have had a hankering to draw more dudes, so this one is a portrait of Zach Condon from the band Beirut.

Since about the age of seventeen I've been a fan of this band - I remember getting a mix cd in the mail from a faraway pen-pal and upon hearing Postcards from Italy became utterly enchanted, forevermore! - It's a precious thing when you can pick up an album at different times in your life and still find it gorgeous and relatable (albeit in an entirely different way...) - and at the moment i'm definitely having a major Beirut kick. In-fact it's the only thing i've been able to listen to for the past two months (interspersed briefly with Atlas Sound and Dustin O'Halloran). Who knows why. I just can't stop. But it's incredible. Perhaps I am in love with these sounds.
What's more, the band are playing at the Sydney Opera House in January, and thankfully i've got a ticket. Think i might dream up some faux gig posters for fun.

(If you followed my art a few years ago then you may remember slightly embarrassing periods of fan-art relating to other male musicians. What can i say, I'm an obsessive creature.)

At the moment i'm really getting into portraiture and doing lots and lots of detail in lead pencil. Keeps me up until the wee hours of the night. I think i'm happy with the way that things are evolving too, which is certainly keeping my heart content. This has been a happy year, and although i floundered around a bit, in terms of knowing where to go with this art stuff, i think i've found my way again. I know what i need to do. Wish me luck. And please universe, learn how to magically make a couple more hours fit into the day!

There aren't many things that i love more than drawing pictures of dresses, (maybe cookie ice cream....but that's another story...) so here's a happy project that i had the good fortune to work on a month or two ago - An Illustration of the Cumberland dress for New Zealand fashion label Crowns Clothing.
Crowns Clothing is an independent Wellington-based label, lovingly run by Morgan Ashworth. Think fresh and pretty garments inspired by picnics and local flora and fauna.
This summer Morgan has collaborated with a selection of young female illustrators who have created custom illustrations inspired by her quaint pieces. I'm super glad to have work alongside some of my fav paintbrush wielding girls - Jessica Sea, Katie Harnett, and Kaye Blegvad. Check them out!

While this blog isn't my personal diary, (and i don't usually feel the need to expel the contents of my life onto it's pages,) today i feel the inclination to write something about what's going on here. Since moving to the city my whole outlook on life has changed dramatically in the last two months (including the four weeks in which i didn't even attempt to update this baby - apologies for being so dead/quiet) ... and well, i just realised that 'life' is finally here and i don't need to create a paper world to keep my company anymore. Transition time! It's tricky to figure out which direction to take now. Late Bloomer, that's me! I'm actually pretty overwhelmed right now and don't know exactly what i mean to convey, but something needs to be put down to record this awkward interim. (Even if it's all realistically just falling into a vortex.)
All i know is that i want to compile a book that was all about being the girl that i was. Everything pink and hazy. Photos of flowers and all those love spells i tried to create. All of that longing packed into a bundle and wrapped up with ribbons. White text.

Goodbye and Hello! You'll never be the same girl forever.

Current obsessions include: sugar coated nuts, a 1950's lemon/lime printed skirt, not being made of marble anymore, Mulder and Scully, walking up and down the same regally named street every day, Nannying, 'Puppies!!!!', Gin and Tonic, future dreaming, running out of money, Dustin O'Halloran, food comas, serendipity, looking people in the eyes vs. wearing sunglasses all the time. Not ever having enough time.

I'd love to find some stockings covered in a print of black cats one day. Or even better, i'd love to design stocking patterns myself! (well, lately i've been dreaming of working on a capsule collection of clothes made from textiles i've designed ...but more on that later...)

Seeing as seamed stockings are one of my obsessions, i couldn't help but draw two pairs of fancy legs and the purple stockings that are up for grabs.

p.s. A nice tip: if you get a hole in your stockings, dab at the outer edges of the damage with clear nailpolish and once it has dried it will stop the fabric from running and getting worse.

Lately I've been lucky enough to do some trades with a couple of fantastic people around the world.
It's pretty amazing that in this day and age you can come into contact with like-minded people via the internet, who perhaps you would never have had the opportunity to meet. It's a thrilling thing to be able to share gifts with people who i find inspiring, and getting parcels in the mail is also something else that brightens my week.

Firstly, An Autumnal lass for Taylor Kitto of Little Deer vintage.
A reflection of Taylor's image, incorporating her love for nature and delicate clothing.

This one is for Katie-Louise Ford, a Melbournian beauty who makes beautiful dresses fit for storybook heroines. (This red dress is one of her designs.)

And this boudoir scene (with enchanted paintings - the sailor is in love with the mermaid!) is to hang in the studio of Aaron Ruff - the talented man behind jewellery label Digby and Iona.

So, that's some of the work i spent my time on last month, and i'm glad they are going to charming new homes. If anyone else is interested in doing a swap, please send me a note. It would make me very happy indeed. :)

A show this wednesday night in Sydney - Quite unlike any other exhibition i've ever participated in.
Each of us included got to curate a set of images to be hung up on the wall - sort of like tumblr in real life. I picked lots of vintage masquerade posters, art deco dames and botanical illustrations. Hope some of you sydneysiders can pop by and check it out.

Yesterday some beautiful things landed in my mailbox:

First, a surprise gift from fellow Fred Astaire fan, Grace Hamilton - a darling from the UK who draws ravishing ladies and also has an obsession with the golden age of hollywood. Pressed flowers, ballerinas, lonely lakes, Ms katharine Hepburn - it's all too wonderful.

And secondly, a trade with Liz Sindler of Kittydearest.
I sent Liz a painting in return for a handsewn set of pastel lingerie. They are delicate and scrumptious and make me think of ice cream, which can only be a good thing. Plus, Kitties! That cuteness speaks for itself.

The group show is open until Sunday the 1st of May and well worth looking at. It's amazing to see the vast array of teapot customisations.

getting to know you

Over the past six months or so some really kind people have featured my art on their blogs and websites and have conducted interviews about the way i like to work. In that space of time i've kept meaning to compile them all into a list and post them here in case anyone was interested in learning more about my practice. It looks like today is the day i've finally gotten around to it. Thanks to those of you who have been supportive of my art. It's overwhelming for me, but also very much appreciated.

This week i've made my first ever real gig poster! Lately i've been making fake ones for bands who i love - but this one is actually going to be printed and pasted around Sydney. Hooray! And I'm doubly happy because it's a poster for my beautiful friend and sweetheart songstress, Rainbow Chan.
Rainbow makes heartfelt music with her acoustic guitar, loop pedals and old toys, - and in May is releasing her EP Brushed upon with rose at The Vanguard in Newtown. I'm so excited and so proud to see her music blossom - ( She's been featured on radio stations JJJ and FBI this year ) - and i'm sure this year has an abundance of fantastic things in store for her. It couldn't happen to a nicer girl.
